Nancy O'Dell's first job in the broadcast industry was as a reporter/anchor at WPDE-TV Myrtle Beach South Carolina. She later worked as morning news anchor and crime reporter at WCBD-TV. Her articles from Charleston on how Charleston police dealt with DUI cases in a manner that was lenient, led to an inquiry by State Law Enforcement Division. The inquiry led to a stronger direction for state officials. Ms. O'Dell was awarded the Best Report of the Media Award in South Carolina by the Associated Press. O'Dell's experience in Charleston led her to serve as co-anchor, investigative report as well as NBC's Miami WTVJ-TV.
